Lowball Poker Rules: The Basics

For those of you that have no idea what lowball poker is, we will go ahead and go through that first! Firstly, lowball poker is the lowest hand wins the entire pot. This is a great poker game that is fun for everyone and anyone that is looking for a card game to play with friends, family or if you are looking to get into poker for real.

Now, lowball starts off with each player being deal five cards, facedown and then there is a betting round. Now in this game, all of the players are required to open with some sort of bet or they have to fold, keep this in mind when you are starting out a game of lowball. The players who do not fold now will have the option to improve their hand by replacing their cards. This is named the draw.

Some of the most popular forms of poker lowball is ace-to-five lowball, which is also named the California lowball and the deuce-to-seven lowball, which is also known as the Kansas City lowball. Now you are probably wondering what the different is, well, ace-to-five lowball is named that because the best hand you can get in the game is a 5-4-3-2-A. The deuce-to-seven lowball’s best hand is a 7-5-4-3-2, not of the same suit. Do you notice the differences? They may be subtle, but different hands win the two different games, so be sure to remember that when you are playing!

Naturally, now that you have the general idea of the game, we can move onto the actual rules of poker lowball, so you know exactly what you are doing in most instances. Keep in mind that many of the rules governing any misdeals for either Texas Hold ‘Em or any other button games can and will also be used to lowball.

There are a few things that can be considered a misdeal and if some of these circumstances come to the attention of the dealer before the two players have done anything with their hand, they can be redealt:

1. The dealer accidently exposes the first or second card of the hand that has been dealt face up.
2. In error, the dealer has exposed two or more cards to the players
3. The dealer accidently deal two or more extra cards in the starting hand of the game.
4. The dealer has given the wrong number of cards to a particular player. There is an exception to this rule and that is that the player may receive one more card to complete a starting hand.
5. The button was not in the correct position.
6. Instead of the card dealing going clockwise, it went counterclockwise.
7. The dealer dealt out cards in the wrong sequence.
8. The dealer has dealt out cards to an empty seat or a player who is not supposed to get a hand.
9. The dealer accidently forgot to deal in one of the players. In this instance, the player must be present at the table and has to bet.

The next rule is that when you are playing in limit play, a bet and four raises are allowed, this is only in multi-handed pots.

Also, if you are a new player, you have two different options available to you:

1. You can wait for the big blind to bet.
2. You can kill the pot of money for double the amount of money of the big blind.

No matter which choice you pick, you have those two options because you are a new player.

In lowball, there are so many different things to consider when you are playing and it is definitely different than any other poker game on the market today. For instance, you can have a single or multiple blind games. Now, you may be curious to know exactly what the differences are and right now, we will go ahead and explore that!

When you have a single-blind game, a player who has less than a half of a blind may be dealt a hand, although, the next player is obligated to take over the blind position. If you are an all-in type of player, you may want to be careful because if you win the pot or buy in again, you will then have to take the blind spot on the next deal or you will have to sit out until there is need for a big blind.

In multiple-blind games, if for any reason that the big blind passes over your seat, you can wait for the big blind, or you have the option of killing the pot in order to be dealt a hand. This obviously, would not imply if you have taken all of your blinds or have changed seats at all.

Another one of the many lowball rules is that a player may draw up to four cards consecutively, if they wish to draw five new cards, four will be dealt right away and then the fifth card will be dealt as soon as everyone else has drawn their cards. This is important to remember if you are the type of person that likes to draw cards to make up the perfect hand. You also have to burn one card before you pick up the top one, this will eliminate any suspicions of cheating.

As in every poker game, five cards are a playing hand and any more or fewer cards in your hand will make it foul. So if you have six cards in your hand, you have a foul hand of cards. In order to draw cards, you must first make sure that you have fewer than five cards in your hand so you do not give yourself a foul hand.

One of the greatest rules in lowball and one that is held up high in respect is that if you are asked how many cards you drew by another active player, you have to respond. The dealer is also the person that has to respond, but you only have to respond if there has been no action done, if there has been action done, you or the dealer do not have to answer the question.

One thing to beware of when you are playing lowball is your body actions. So many people simply do not realize that if they knock on the table or pat their hand, it usually means a pass. So if you are a twitchy person, this is definitely something that you will need to take into consideration and watch you’re twitching.

Let’s say that you have a pair in your hand and you think that, that will do it. You need to be sure that you announce that you have a pair in your hand in lowball, otherwise you risk losing the pot. So be sure that you announce that you have a pair and you should be fine! Lowball is sort of like the game ‘uno’ in this aspect, where you lose the game if you do not call out that you have a pair. So make sure that if you do have a pair, you are letting everyone in the game know it.
